Recycle South, a leading recycling company that employs and supports workers with disabilities, today announced the closure of its Further Processing Plant at Makarewa due to the ongoing financial climate and global export unrest. This strategic move will allow the company to refocus its priorities and ensure it continues to deliver essential services and support to its vulnerable workforce.

"Supporting workers with disabilities has always been the core purpose of Recycle South, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to that mission," said Chris Montgomery, General Manager of Recycle South. "While the closure of our Makarewa plant is a difficult decision, it will allow us to redirect our resources and efforts towards better serving our employees and the disability community we were founded to support."

Recycle South was established with the goal of creating meaningful employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities, providing them with the training, resources, and support they need to thrive in the workplace. The company's recycling operations have not only diverted millions of pounds of waste from landfills, but have also empowered countless workers to achieve their full potential and contribute to their local communities.

"Our employees are the heart and soul of Recycle South, and we will do everything in our power to ensure they continue to receive the support and resources they need," added Montgomery. "By refocusing our priorities, we can double down on our mission and find new and innovative ways to enable our people and create a more inclusive and accessible work environment."

The closure of the Makarewa plant is expected to be completed by the end of April this year, and Recycle South is committed to working closely with affected employees to ensure a smooth transition and provide any necessary assistance but does not expect the closure to result in any redundancies with all affected staff being transferred to the company’s Ettrick Street operation. The board has decided to put the plant on care and maintenance while considering its options, which may include selling the plant as a going concern.
